I am writing to request there be concrete educational choices for school age students with special needs.

Currently, integration or mainstreaming is the only option available to most students with special needs and I suggest that this is unfair and unkind.

While many special needs children can and do thrive with support in regular classrooms, there are many students who are overwhelmed by the sheer numbers in classrooms, by the movement in the hallways, by the lights and by the level of stimulation and distraction.

It is recommended by professional therapists that these special students have a small, quiet, highly supervised, highly structured, therapeutic school environment. We do not have any such full-time special education classes available in our community.

Although integration into regular classrooms is the only politically correct ‘choice’, it can be very traumatic to children with neuro-complex disabilities and the only remaining option to the exhausted parents is to home school their children.

There is an urgent need for alternate, small, special education programs in our community to support the unique needs of children with neuro-complex disabilities. When it comes to learning, one size does not fit all. No two children learn alike, and some have difficulty achieving success in a classroom setting.

I support the creation of full-time enrolling special education schools as an option for children and their parents.
