Rising Levels of Complex Neuro-Developmental Disorders in Children

Importance of Early Intervention

Research shows that these children have great potential for independent living if they can get the help they need at a younger age. Nanaimo Unique Kids Learning Centre is dedicated to delivering a program that will start these children off on the right path, lending hope to concerned parents. Every child has unique needs and other systems have not always had the resources to cater to each child.

Parents Welcomed as Family Members

The staff works closely with parents in terms of building a program focusing on the needs, strengths and potential of each child. A communication logbook goes home every night. "Our parents are treated as family members."

The program provides a warm, nurturing environment. Some of the children have come from schools where they experienced bullying and a sense of isolation. At NUKO, the children learn to accept each other. "Our children want to have fun, to pursue their interests and to feel they can fit in and be respected".

Importance of Structured Program

The small group size enables the staff to create a structured program that allows each child to experience success. The program is adapted from the best practices available - proven techniques. NUKO Learning Centre does not use just one approach - the program uses a blend of methods that work best for each child.

Promising Signs for the Future

The bottom line is that not every child can flourish in the public school system. This is true for all children but especially for students with complex neuro-developmental disorders. One mother says that she feels like her family has been handed gold, and her son is much happier to learn now. He has a strong sense of friendships. Another mother adds that her son is socializing more and talks about his fun times at NUKO program. Great strides for these children.
