N.U.K.O. is dedicated to:
  • Developing confident, happy children who can make their own decisions in life.
  • Teaching each child to respect life and recognize the needs of other people as well as their own.

NUKO Learning Centre is committed to preparing children with neuro-developmental disabilities to live productively and independently in their community according to their individual wishes, needs and abilities.

With the support of dedicated and trained staff, parents and consultants NUKO provides a learning environment that is accepting and nurturing, with a wide rage of opportunities for learning social, communication, academic and physical skills.

History

Nanaimo Unique Kids Learning Centre caters to a range of children with major social and emotional needs and special education requirements. These children thrive in our smaller groups with comprehensive and individualized programs.

Goals

  • To promote optimal academic, social and personal functioning, according to an individualized, planned curriculum and program.
  • To promote a sense of personal competence and confidence.
  • To promote the development of realistic skills and abilities serving all areas of the child’s life.
  • To provide a caring and supportive learning environment that is interesting, exciting, challenging and fun.
  • To maintain effective contact and involvement with community activities.
  • To include parents in a meaningful and cooperative process in planning, setting goals, and implementing the individualized curriculum/program.

Each child has his or her own Individual Education Plan (IEP). In conjunction with parents and staff, a NIDES Special Education Consultant develops a plan to meet the needs and abilities of each child. The IEP consists of Social Skills/Communication Skills/Physical Skills as well as Academic Skills.

Our Academic Curriculum is a modified version of the standard BC Ministry of Education curriculum with an emphasis on core academics: language, reading, mathematics. The curriculum also includes physical education, outdoor and community recreation, and creative expressive arts.

General learning activities focus on building individual social, personal and communication skills with an emphasis on building confidence and competence through structured and planned activities.

The students receive ongoing physical education, including the teaching of group recreational skills (basketball, badminton, volleyball) in our gym in order to facilitate the development of physical abilities and motor skills.
